The Sun Temple of Konark was built in the 13th century in Orissa, India. It is also known as Black Pagoda. It is believed that the temple was built by king Narasimhadeva of Eastern Ganga Dynasty around 1250 CE. It was originally situated on the banks of river Chandrabhaga which is now merged with the sea. Currently, it is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
We visited that place January 2014. It was overall a good experience. Ticket is required for entry. Counter is on the left side of the entry gate or road. The spokes of the giant wheels of the rath act as large sundials & show the correct time of the day.
Inside the Temple:-
It is a pity that the main temple got damaged in the British rule & the main temple has been filled with sand to ensure it does not fall down, the magnets in the temple were holding the the structure & with the British trying to dismantle the magnet the temple was about to come down.
Sun temple Konark at Odisha is one of its best architecture that found all over the world and the best tourist destination in Odisha.
All over the places there were stunning sculptures..
There were some attractive stone figures of the temple dancers known as devadasis. They showed the various dance movement of popular dance form Odissi.
The place was awesome some of the carvings are absolutely brilliant. The concept was to create a temple to worship sun.
Travel Tips :-
We would suggest to hire a guide over there to get the glimpse of history that is hidden in this marvel. Guide would not cost much, less than a hundred rupees only. Though the remains are very less of this magnificent temple but still rich in ancient architecture and our historic engineering mettle.
“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.”
– – Bill Bryson
